The New Orleans Filipino American Lions Club, Lions Club International and Poets of Color and Culture, in cooperation with St. Anna’s Episcopal Church will host a benefit for the victims of the recent Super Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines on Wednesday, December 11, 2013 at 6:45pm, following the weekly Wednesday services at 5:30pm.
Local actor/director Frederick Mead will serve as emcee, and there will be poetry and music by Delia Nakayama, Peter Nu and Judy Spellman. Christina Quackenbush, proprietor of New Orleans restaurant Milkfish, and Francesca McKenzie of the Cripple Creek Theater Company will perform a traditional Filipino dance.
The benefit is free to attend but donations of any size are welcome. All monetary contributions collected for relief efforts will be channeled directly to affected areas most in need, and will be administered by the Lions Club International Foundation, a 501(c)3 organization collecting donations worldwide.
Father Bill Terry of St. Anna’s remarked, "If anyone understands the turmoil of disaster the people of New Orleans do. It is our duty and obligation to return the manifold kindnesses that the world has blessed us with after Katrina to others who are just starting on their journey of resilience and restoration. I hope that in some small way our city will show deep and abiding thanks giving by paying it forward to our sisters and brothers in the Philippines."
The organization has also created a New Orleans Filipino Lions Club Disaster Relief Fund account through Capital One. Any Capital One branch in the Greater New Orleans area can accept donations to the fund.
Chartered in 1987, the New Orleans Filipino American Lions Club is the only Asian affiliated Lions Club in New Orleans.
